Referees boss Kapanga to go unopposed
National Football Referees Association (NFRA) chairperson Patrick Kapanga and treasurer Kelvin Ngulanga will go unopposed during the body’s executive committee elections on October 15 in Lilongwe.
This is according to a list of names which NFRA has unveiled following the closure of nominations last week.
The body’s outgoing general secretary Chris Kalichero, who is vying for re-election, said as at September 30, no challenger had emerged for the two positions.
“I can comfirm that the two will go unopposed because there’s no window period for nominations,” he said.
If handed the new mandate, Kapanga will be in the position for a third-term.
But Kalichero is facing opposition from renowned retired referee, VersonLwanja, and Alfred Chasowa.
Asked why he thinks his position has attracted other contestants, the general secretary boosted : “This position is the engine room of the association so everybody wants to take it. But I am not fazed by the opposition.”
In the vice-chairperson race, incumbent Alex Mbale will tussle with Billy Yaluma and KalyotoNgosi.
Those hunting for the vice-general secretary’s office are OpaMkandawire, Simon Jovinala and incumbent LusunguMtumbula.
Meanwhile, Joseph Nyirongo, ChuchuGondwe, Funny Minandi and Noel Kalande will have to defend their seats as executive members against Benito Chilola, FestonKusekuse, Oscar Kossam and Devine Khaula.
Football analyst PeterkinsKayira has since said for Kapanga to go unopposed, it is a sign that he has done well in the association’s operations.
“I don’t know what is happening within the referees’ community, which has led into Kapanga going unopposed. However, from outside, I can say that the chairperson’s committee has done well to bring sanity to football. This is evidenced by the punishments imposed on misbehaving referees,” he said.
